A state of emergency has been declared in the southern Kyrgyz region of Osh.
We advise against all but essential travel to the Osh Oblast (Province). British nationals already in Osh Oblast are advised to exercise extreme caution.
Violent clashes broke out in the southern region of Osh in Kyrgyzstan in the late evening of 10 June. Disturbances began in the city of Osh following a fight between ethnic Kyrgyz and Uzbek youths. The violence subsequently escalated, leading to shooting, burning of cars and looting of shops. Many Uzbecks are reported to be fleeing to the border.

Foreign Office minister met with representatives to share their concerns regarding the treatment of Bahá’ís in Iran and to show the UK's commitment to seeing an improvement in their situation.
Alistair Burt met with Dr Kishan Manocha, Secretary of the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of the UK, and Daniel Wheatley, their Government Relations Officer.
Following his meeting Alistair Burt said:
“I am extremely concerned by the impending trial of the seven spiritual leaders of the Bahá’í faith. This trial comes at a time when we are remembering the human rights abuses surrounding the elections in Iran a year ago.
I call on the Iranian Government to ensure, without delay, that the rights of these individuals are fully protected; that they are given due legal process, including being released on bail and given a fair and transparent trial, in accordance with international standards.
I also urge the Iranian government to cease the harassment of, and to also respect the rights, of many members of minority groups who continue to face arrest and lengthy prison sentences, often on vaguely worded charges of acting against national security.”

Members of the UN Security Council will vote at 1500 BST today on a draft resolution expanding the breadth and reach of UN sanctions on Iran.
Today’s vote will be the sixth UN Security Council Resolution on Iran since 2006 and, if passed, the fourth that imposes new sanctions. Previous resolutions include:
• UN Security Council Resolution 1696 (July 2006) first demanded Iran suspend enrichment and other proliferation sensitive nuclear activities.
• UN Security Council Resolutions 1737 (December 2006), 1747 (March 2007) and 1803 (March 2008) reiterated these demands and imposed progressively tougher sanctions.
• UN Security Council Resolution 1835 (September 2008) reaffirmed the Council's previous resolutions and demands.
The UK will be participating in the vote as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.
